Two Latinas Created A Line Of Athleisure Lingerie For Active Women-On-The-Go

At Latina, we strive to inspire our readers with real-life stories that celebrate Latino achievements. That's why we decided to create a weekly segment called #LatinaMakers, where we will highlight Latinx entrepreneurs that are empowering our community through their creativity.

While sexy-laced undies might leave your beau gasping for air in the bedroom, they're far from sexy when it comes to the gym. Unlike breathable bottoms that are a must when breaking a sweat, lace panties can trap moisture increasing the risk of getting a yeast infection.

But let's be honest. Not all of us are carrying an extra pair of undies to change in before hitting the elliptical. That's why two Latinas created a intimates line for the active women on-the-go. Meet Camila and Valeria Velandia. The Colombian-born sisters created miel® in 2008, as a solution for the women who wants to easily transition from a morning yoga class to lunch with the girls.

We draw our inspiration from today’s modern woman; she is strong, confident, sexy and always on-the-go. Our pieces not only fit her busy lifestyle, they complement it and allow for comfortable and easy transition from one activity to the next

The line, which includes seamless panties, camisoles, and more, are made with a blend of microfiber and Spandex featuring Guardin™ for a fresh feel all day long.  Best of all you can be stylish and comfortable without having to break the bank. All the pieces range from $20.00 - $45.00 and are available at multiple locations, including leading lingerie boutique and ready-to-wear stores, as well as online at Anthropologie.com, and MielSisters.com.

We caught up with the sisters to talk about working together, how they started the line, and more. Read it all in our exclusive interview below.

How did the idea of starting an intimates line come about?

As sisters and best friends who have always worked, played and exercised together, we continually faced the same problem: how to stay fresh, comfy and sexy from morning to night, without having to change underwear a million times a day. This quest led us to identify a gap in the market between “activewear,” not the best choice for work or an evening out, and “lingerie,” often impractical and uncomfortable in the gym or office. And so we set out to find a solution for busy stylish women on the go.

Using innovative new fabrics and knitting technologies, we created a collection of modern seamless basics that suit all environments, eliminating the need to change three times a day. All miel® bras, panties and camisoles are developed with a mind to support a woman’s daily activities at home, at the office, at the gym, and out on the town. Our undies are just as perfect for your yoga routine as under the little black dress you throw on after class before heading out for drinks. We deliver “all day, every day” underwear that appeals to active women of all ages.

Miel means 'honey' in English. How is the brand adding flavor to the market?

By adding a touch of sweetness! As South American women, we are obsessed with perfect cuts that flatter a woman’s unique curves. In fact, we spent years perfecting the cuts, fabric blends, colors, and look and feel of our pieces so that our lingerie fits all body shapes: apple, pear, hourglass, and rectangle. Our beautiful basics come from our knowledge of form and function, to which we added a bit of sex appeal from our Latin heritage.

What makes our underwear extra sweet is that we use high-quality microfiber, spandex, and cotton in different sections of our bras and panties to ensure comfort and fit. The miel® product line features 4-way stretch technology that makes pieces look streamlined against the body whether you are wearing clothes or not. We also integrate seamless and flat-seam compression in specific areas of garments for additional stretch or support.

Every season, we feature new bursts of color based on what’s happening in fashion and on the street. This spring, we’ll showcase a bright lime green and a beautiful shade of Moroccan sand that provides a better nude for tan skin.

People often say never mix business with family. How have you made it work?

Actually, the best part of our job is being able to work together! The greatest gift our mom ever gave us was the tools to build a strong friendship together as sisters. We lean on each other, we listen to each other and we trust each other.

Were there any obstacles you faced when creating miel®?

One of the biggest challenges we faced was building awareness and helping dispel misinformation in the beauty industry that in order to be sexy, a woman needs to be uncomfortable. Once women try our products, the rest is effortless.

What is one must-have item from your line?

We love all our pieces, but our Nana Bra and Viki bikini are our go-to everyday first layer. With that said, all our pieces are versatile and suitable for any type of environment or activity, so that a woman doesn’t need to change three times a day. We want women to feel that our lingerie doesn’t just fit but also complements their lifestyle. For us, the fit is a celebration of a woman’s body. Our pieces move the way she moves.

I find that the quality of lingerie from Colombia is much better than a lot of brands of intimates marketed in the States. Do you find this to be true?

We have to agree with you about the amazing quality of the intimates made in Colombia! We are currently manufacturing 50% of our collection there (and the other 50% in Canada) and looking into eventually moving our entire production to Colombia because of the great quality, finishing, and technology that is provided there. Plus obviously just the fact that we are also Colombians :)
