Long before the legendary Rita Moreno was cracking audiences up playing the sassy abuelita Lydia on 'One Day at a Time', she was breaking down barriers for minorities who would come to Hollywood after her.

In 1961, Moreno became the first Latina to ever win an Academy Award. She earned it for her portrayal of Anita in the musical West Side Story. Her acceptance speech that night was legendary.

"I can't believe it! Good lord . . . I'll leave you with that!" And when you’re on that kind of emotional roller coaster, what else would you need to say?

But there was something that went on behind-the-scenes that most people may not know about.

During a sit down with Couch Surfing host Lola Ogunnaike for PeopleTV, Moreno opened up about how another legend, Joan Crawford, attempted to steal her spotlight on Oscar night.

“Joan Crawford, who was a co-hostess--- big star at the time---was already three sheets to the wind,” she said in this Latina.com exclusive clip. “She was spiking her Pepsi Cola because she was married to Mr. Pepsi Cola. And I come into the wings, and the moment I went into the wings I just started to cry.

“And she comes out--- she was a real publicity hog, like a lot of those ladies were---she grabs me because there was a photographer there. She grabs me and hugs me to her enormous chest because she was built like a linebacker. And she buries my face into her chest and says, ‘there, there.’ And you cannot see [what I’m trying to say].

“I have the Oscar in my hand and she goes, ‘there, there.’ And the photographer says to her, ‘can we see Ms. Moreno’s face?’ And she says, ‘but she’s so emotional.’
