Melanie Martinez debuted her much-awaited first album, Cry Baby, today and with it, she’s bringing her always unique and fun style.
Last year, we spoke to The Voice alum about her hit single, “Dollhouse," where she explained that her upbringing and childhood played a major role in influencing her work. Now, Teen Vogue caught up with the twenty-year-old starlet and got the details on her new sound.
“This album tells the story of a character — Cry Baby. She’s super insecure at first, and then she becomes more confident and comfortable in her own skin,” Martinez said. “Before I wrote this album, I was so insecure. I took everything personally. I used music as therapy and embraced being a cry baby.” Martinez decided to turn the negative into a positive, or as she puts it, “an insult to a compliment.”
The songs complement the singer’s fun, playful personality in that it’s set up as a storybook, complete with fairytale illustrations. “The songs have childhood-themed names, but they relate to adult situations. I wrote about scenarios that I was going through and then disguised them,” she explains.
Martinez’s debut album comes with another added perk – she’s also collaborating with makeup brand Lime Crime, which shows Martinez sported bright, eccentric colors. “Me and all my friends love their eccentric colors, and this blue is a perfect addition to the line,” she said of the electric blue shade she sports in the new ad.
We can’t wait to take a cue from Martinez’s music — and lips — with her new songs.
